SW02: Your
Connection Reflex? -- Classical Sources
|
 |
 |
 |
Every show in the Simple
Wisdom series draws upon classical and contemporary sources. Here we provide
some of the classical sources that inspired Irwin's teachings for this
particular show. We hope that reflecting upon them will help to deepen your
appropriation of the show's teaching.
27And
God created the human in God’s image, in the image of God, God created the
human; male and female God created them.
Genesis 1:27
18God
said, “It is not good for the human to be alone; I will make a fitting helper…”
Genesis 2:18
1God
appeared to him by the terebinths of Mamre; he was sitting at the entrance of
the tent as the day grew hot. 2Looking up, he saw three men standing
near him. As soon as he saw them, he ran from the entrance of the tent to greet
them and, bowing to the ground, 3he said, “My lords, if it please
you, do not go on past your servant. 4Let a little water be brought;
bathe your feet and recline under the tree. 5And let me fetch a
morsel of bread that you may refresh yourselves; then go on—seeing that you have
come your servant’s way.” They replied, “Do as you have said.”
Genesis 18:1-5
If one is studying the Shema
in the Torah, and the time for reading the Shema has arrived: if one had the
Shema in mind then one is exempt from reading it. Between the paragraphs of the
Shema, one may greet another out of respect and respond.
Mishnah, Berachot, 2:1
Ben Zoma said: What labors
Adam had to carry out before he obtained bread to eat! He ploughed, he sowed,
he reaped, he bound [the sheaves], he threshed and winnowed and selected the
ears, he ground [them], and sifted [the flour], he kneaded and baked, and then
at last he ate; whereas I get up, and find all these things done for me.
