Every show in the Simple
Wisdom series draws upon classical and contemporary sources. Here we provide
some of the classical sources that inspired Irwin's teachings for this
particular show. We hope that reflecting upon them will help to deepen your
appropriation of the show's teaching.
And God
created the human in God’s image, in the image of God, God created the
human; male and female God created them. And God created the human
[Adam] in God’s image, in the image of God, God created the human; male
and female God created them. And God blessed them, and God said to
them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it;
and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the
air, and over every living thing that moves upon the earth.
Genesis
1:27-28
The Lord God said, “It is not good for the
human to be alone; I will make a fitting helper….”
Genesis 2:18
So God cast a deep sleep upon the man;
and, while he slept, He took one of his ribs and closed up the flesh at
that spot. And God fashioned the rib that God had taken from the man
into a woman; and God brought her to the man. Then the man said, “This
one at last is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh…..”
Genesis 2:21-23
Isaac had just come back from the vicinity
of Beer-lahai-roi, for he was settled in the region of the Negeb. And
Isaac went out walking in the field toward evening and, looking up, he
saw camels approaching. Raising her eyes, Rebekah saw Isaac. She
alighted from the camel and said to the servant, “Who is that man
walking in the field toward us?” And the servant said, “That is my
master.” So she took her veil and covered herself. The servant told
Isaac all the things that he had done. Isaac then brought her into the
tent of his mother Sarah, and he took Rebekah as his wife. Isaac loved
her….
Genesis 24:62-67
They heard the sound of God moving about in
the garden at the breezy time of day; and the man and his wife hid from
God among the trees of the garden. God called out to the man and said to
him, “Where are you?” He replied, “I heard the sound of You
in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked, so I hid.” Then God
asked, “Who told you that you were naked? Did you eat of the tree from
which I had forbidden you to eat?” The man said, “The woman
You put at my side—she gave me of the tree, and I ate.” And
God said to the woman, “What is this you have done!”
Genesis 3:8-13
Any love that depends on a specific
cause, when that cause is gone, the love is gone; but if it does not
depend on a specific cause, it will never cease.
