SW06: Sacred Sex - Classical Sources
|
 |
 |
 |
Every show in the Simple
Wisdom series draws upon classical and contemporary sources. Here we provide
some of the classical sources that inspired Irwin's teachings for this
particular show. We hope that reflecting upon them will help to deepen your
appropriation of the show's teaching.
Now the man knew (yada) his
wife Eve, and she conceived and bore Cain, saying, "I have gained a male
child with the help of the Lord.
Genesis 4: 1
Rav Kahana lay under the bed of Rav who
was carousing and speaking frivolously with his wife of sexual matters:
afterward, [Rav] had intercourse with her. Rav Kahana said to Rav:
“You appear to me to be like a hungry man who has never had sex before,
for you act with frivolity in your lust.” He [Rav] said to Kahana:
“Are you here? Get out! It is improper for you to lie under
my bed!” [Kahana] said to him: “This is a matter of Torah and I
must study.”
Babylonian Talmud, Berakhot 62a.
The times for lovemaking prescribed in the
Torah are: For men of independence every day, for laborers twice a week, for
ass-drivers once a week, for camel drivers once in 30 days, for sailors once in
six months….How often for scholars? Every Shabbaton.
Babylonian Talmud, Ketubot 62a
You should begin with words that will draw
her heart to you and will settle her mind and make her happy...
Tell her things which will produce in her
desire, attachment, love, willingness, and passion...
Win her heart with words of charm and
seduction...
Never have sex with your wife while she is
sleepy, for your minds will not be unified...
Never hasten to arouse her desire...
Begin in a pleasing manner of love, so that
she will achieve satisfaction before you...
When a man cleaves
to his wife in holiness, the divine presence is manifested. In the mystery
of man and woman, there is God. But if they are only aroused, the divine
presence will leave them and it will become fire."
Nachmanides, The Holy Letter (Iggeret
HaKodesh), annotated and edited by Seymour Cohen (New York: Ktav,
1976, pp. 140-144).
